Casio's Yamagata Casio plant in Higashine, Japan, is the brand's only site producing watches labeled Made in Japan, including the GW5000U. Wang tours the building that handles movement production, molding, dial making and the Premium Production Line, where high-end G-Shocks and Oceanus watches are assembled and inspected. The visit also shows how Casio's largely industrial process differs from traditional watchmaking.

Inside The Manufacture: A Visit To Casio's Yamagata Factory

By TanTan Wang

TanTan Wang of Hodinkee tours Yamagata Casio, the site in Higashine, Yamagata Prefecture, that acts as Casio's mother factory and produces every Casio or G-Shock labeled Made in Japan. The tour covers quartz movement production, injection molding of resin cases and dial parts, and the Premium Production Line where MR-G, Oceanus and other high-end models are assembled and inspected. Wang notes that most dials are injection-molded rather than metal-machined, and that the factory has no watchmakers in the traditional sense. The visit also included a look at the Blue Rose Project, which Wang previews as covered elsewhere.
